A Mentorship Plan:
How to help others maximize their success
Mentoring is an enriching experience. Utilizing the platform of your life experience and success to help others advance is an easy way to grow experts and maximize talent.
Working with a mentor will:
- Build leadership skills – the ability to motivate and encourage others while building credibility
- Improve communication skills – to learn to leverage the language that will get ideas across every time and to all
- Learn new perspectives – assist in gaining a fresh perspective on issues and expand the current way of thinking
- Advance current career path – strengthen on-the-job performance while helping others along the way, gaining personal satisfaction
Plan and Action:
- Frequency of contact – Minimum of one 15-minute telephone (or more time if possible) conversation per week. One “formal” in person session every month lasting 45 minutes to one hour.
- Method of contact – In addition to the telephone calls and in person meetings, texting and emails with questions and comments will be on going. Expectation is a reply will be sent within 24 hours even if it is to say, “I have no time to respond right now.” The initiative for making contact can be either the mentor or mentee’s responsibility. Skype or a similar technologies can be an alternative way to meet for the formal session every month.
- Duration of Mentorship program – A minimum of one year.
- Skills, knowledge, and experience – Discuss and share techniques that leaders are expected to develop in the role assigned.
Drive the Relationship – With Mentors input, Mentee will identify the skills, knowledge, and/or goals that Mentors believes will help Mentee better achieve goals. In addition, Mentee will bring up new topics that are important to them and provide feedback.
Development Planner – Maintain a mentoring plan and work to set up goals, developmental activities, and time frames.
Resource Partner – Work with Mentor to seek resources for learning; identify people and information that might be helpful.
Teacher – Look for opportunities to give back; share any information that Mentor thinks might be valuable with others
Continuous Learner – Take full advantage of this opportunity to learn.
Coach/Advisor – Give advice and guidance, share ideas, and provide feedback. Share information on “unwritten rules for success” within environment/organization
Source of Encouragement/Support – Act as sounding board for ideas/concerns about Mentees choices; provide insights into possible opportunities
Resource Person – Identify resources to help Mentee enhance personal development and career growth.
Champion – Serve as advocate for Mentee whenever opportunities become available
Devil’s Advocate – When appropriate, Mentor will play devil’s advocate to help Mentee think through important approaches, issues, decisions and strategies
Confidentiality – Information shared within mentoring discussions will be strictly confidential
Validate Mentees sense of mission in the industry including ‘branding’ to give the Mentee leverage to live their life’s mission
- Utilize the support provided by Mentor. Mentee wants to turn their ‘mentee’ ship into being a better mentor for others
- Mentorship will continue to motive Mentee to be the best in the current situation, and future roles
- Work around Mentors schedule
- Expand Mentees sphere of influence while understanding the perception others have of Mentee. This will fuel creativity and innovation
